RPM & load: reading the ratings

Why a centre’s safe speed drops as load climbs — and how to stay inside the envelope.

A live centre spins on sealed bearings, and those bearings have a speed and load limit. The two interact: push more axial load through the centre and its safe maximum RPM comes down. Manufacturers publish a peak figure for light load — treat it as a ceiling, not a target.

The trade-off, in plain terms

  • Light work, high speed: small diameters, finishing passes — you can run near the rated RPM.
  • Heavy work, lower speed: big bar, roughing, interrupted cuts — wind the speed back and let the bearings breathe.
  • Heat is the tell: if the centre runs hot, you are over the envelope. Reduce speed or step up to a heavier-rated centre.

Rough guide by duty

DutyTypical max RPMLoad headroom
Standard~4,000–4,500General turning
Heavy Duty~3,000To 1,500 kg
CNC / high-speed~6,000+Light, balanced work

Indicative only — always work to the figure printed on the centre you buy.
